40 Little Things You Can Do To Break Your Creative Block

Ayannah Newton

This infographic really caught my attention! It, as the title suggests, lists 40 things an artist can do to break a creative block. Although it uses a lot of colors, it is well organized, easy to read, and pleasing to the eye. I found it to be inspirational as an artist myself. Not only does it convey the information well, but it also reminds me of something a young artist may hang in their studio for motivation.

I Love Typography (ILT)

by Ayannah Newton

I Love Typography is a great blog with an abundance of news and info about typefaces. They hold a number of events including a series called “Font Fashion Week” (below), which features and celebrates the latest trends in the world of typography. They even have a great amount of typefaces by numerous designers available for purchase. The design of the pages may seem a bit cluttered, yet they are very organized which makes things easy to find. For example, if looking to purchase a typeface you can view the available fonts based on the typeface category (as seen on in the first right-hand sidebar).

Acuvue Contact Lenses

Ayannah Newton

I chose a box of contact lenses for this blog post because they are something I use almost everyday and never actually sat and looked at the design of the packaging. The graphics as well as the typography actually provides the viewer with an understanding of what they are getting out of the product. Behind “1-DAY” there is a graphic of the contact lenses themselves. What I found to be even more intriguing, however, was the typography of the word moist. Not only are the letters made to look like bodies of water, but the center of the “o” is shaped like a droplet of water, or contact solution. It tells the viewer that the contact lenses will not make your eyes dry, which is pretty important for contact wearers. Looking at this with a graphic design eye inspired me to take a look at and appreciate the designs and typography on other products that I use on a daily basis.

LG Logo

Ayannah Newton

The LG logo was designed to represent the values of the brand. Their main value is humanity, followed by global (outreach), technology, tomorrow (the future), and energy. The logo is comprised of a red circle, to represent friendliness, as well as a design of the human face using the letters “L” and “G.” Rather than using additional colors for the face, the designer of the logo utilized negative space to create a more futuristic look. According to the LG website, they believe their logo represents the brands’ values so well that it is important that it never changes.

13th

Netflix (2016)

The film “13th” by filmmaker Ava DuVernay was release on Netflix in October of 2016. “13th” is one of many on Netflix that bring awareness to racial inequality in the U.S. It specifically focuses on disproportionate rates at which African Americans are convicted in the States. The purpose of the film was to bring awareness to the affects that the 13th Amendment, as well as the Jim Crow laws and segregation have of on today’s conviction rates. Most people are aware that the 13th Amendment abolished slavery. However, it states “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist.” The exception basically means that forced labor, which is what slavery was, is justified as long as the person doing labor is a convicted criminal. Most schools in the U.S. don’t teach that part of it. The film presents the issue of the exception within the 13th Amendment serving as a loophole for continued domination over the black community, as well as other people of color, in this country.

“NOW MORE THAN EVER

SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER HAS NEVER BEEN MORE VITAL THAN IT IS IN THIS MOMENT IN HISTORY. WATCH AVA DuVERNAY’S 13TH, AND THEN TAKE ACTION.”

The poster above is one of many created by Netflix to bring awareness to the film and the issues presented within it as a form of protest. Netflix created a website solely dedicated to giving viewers free access to download posters like the one above. The website also provides other graphics (png’s) available for download which allows the audience to create their own posters.
